KakaoTalk is a downloadable software application for mobile devices that allows its users to send and receive messages including photos, voice messages, URL links, and contact information, both on a one-to-one basis and in groups, all for free.
To use the application, you only need to enter your phone number without registering or logging-in.
Kakao account is a way to identify you from others by using email address as an ID. You can bring your previous data in case of device or mobile number change. To connect to Kakao account, go to “Setting”.
**The data you can bring via Kakao account:Friends list, Friends recommendation list, Blocked list, KakaoTalk ID, Profile image, and Status message
(If you do not have your friend's phone number saved to your device, his/her name will appear as they set it on KakaoTalk.)
** Caution : Kakao account can be used with only one mobile number.
- You cannot use two different phone numbers with one Kakao account simultaneously. If you connect to same Kakao account with different phone number, the previous KakaoTalk service will be deleted.
- If you change your phone number and then connect to same Kakao account through the new verification process, the previous KakaoTalk service will be deleted.
BlackBerry uses the BlackBerry Internet Service for internet connection.
If you are a registered BIS user, please check the BIS connection status on your device
If you are not a registered BIS user, you need to configure your APN setting to connect your device to the 3G network.
** To change your setting to APN
- OS 5.0: “Options”> “Advanced Options”> TCP/IP
- OS 6.0: “Option”> “Device”> “Advanced Systems Setting”>TCP/IP
The payment option for APN setting depends on your phone service provider.
KakaoTalk for BlackBerry uses the same alert sound setting for BlackBerry OS.
Since the default alert sound of BlackBerry OS is [Silent], a user must change the alert sound setting after installing the app for the first time.
If you wish to be alerted for all received messges, please change setting for both [KakaoTalk] and [KakaoTalk group chatting].

A KakaoTalk ID is a way to identify you from others without revealing your phone number.
You can add people to your friends list if you know their IDs without having to know their phone numbers.
While in the "Friends" tab, press the menu button (beside the call button) on your phone.
Then press "Find" to search for a friend using his/her KakaoTalk ID.
Eventhough your alerts settings is correctly set, alerts may arrive late or you may not be able to get alerts if your BlackBerry device is alternating between Wi-Fi and 3G networks for better connection.
Unread messages and chatting lists may cause the loading speed to slow down. It is best to first open all unread chatting lists and view unread messages, and then leave chatting lists that you have finished with.
After doing so the loading will become considerably faster.
If your BlackBerry OS has older version than 5.0, it may not support the language, cauing the messages to appear in question marks.
Update your BlackBerry OS to the latest version to solve this issue. However,the texts that have already been turned into question marks cannot be reverted back.
To upgrade your BlackBerry to the latest OS, contact your service provider or RIM support.
Go to 'friends' or 'friends?'tab and then press the menu button. You can block friends you don't want to chat with and you will not receive any messages from the person(s).
If you wish to unblock friends, go to 'friends' or 'friends?' tab and then press the menu button, Or you can go to ['Settings' tab > Manage friends > Blocked] to unblock friends. It may take a while for unblocked friends to appear on your friends list again.
Go to "Setting" and tab on "My Profile" to change your status message.
Font size on KakaoTalk for BlackBerry is automatically set to the font size of BlackBerry OS.
If you wish to change the font size on KakaoTalk, change the font size for the BlackBerry OS under “Options”.
Please note that the maximum font size for KakaoTalk is smaller than the maximum font size for BlackBerry OS.
KakaoTalk allows users to set close friends as "Favorites". To add a friend to your "Favorites", press the star icon in your friend's miniprofile.
Similarly, to delete a friend from your "Favorites", press the star icon in your friend's miniprofile.
1. While logged on to KakaoTalk with previously registered mobile phone number, go to ['Settings' tab > Delete Account] and delete your account. Then with your new mobile phone number, go through the verification process again.
Before deleting KakaoTalk, you can safely back-up datas from your previous account by setting up Kakao account under 'Settings' tab. If you use the same e-mail account as your previous account when registering new mobile phone number, your previous account will be deleted.

2. With your new KakaoTalk account, Let your friends know of your changed mobile phone number.
* If you do not delete your previous KakaoTalk, it will stay up, and we cannot delete it for you.
- If you do not delete your previous KakaoTalk, the below may occur –
1) Your friends may still have your previous number in their friends list, and can mistakenly send messages to your previous number.
2) If someone else starts using your old number, your friends’ messages may mistakenly be sent to him/her.
That is the number of your friends who have not yet read the message you sent. When all of your friends have checked the message, the number will disappear.
KakaoTalk for BlackBerry supports 5 languages - Korean, English, Japanese, Indonesian and Thai.
The language setting on KakaoTalk is optimized according to the default language setting of your BlackBerry OS. If languages other than Korean, Japanese, Indonesian and Thai are selected as default language on your OS, KakaoTalk will run in English.
If you have changed the langauge setting on your OS, you have to restart KakaoTalk application to update its language settings.
KakaoTalk will be available in more lanuages shortly.
You can use KakaoTalk with overseas phone number. Please make sure that the country code is correct before entering your phone number (without entering the country code), then go through the SMS verification process.
If the default country code is not correct, choose the correct country and the corresponding code will appear at the top of the page.
If you have Wi-Fi connection, chatting is free of charge. Otherwise, you will be charged according to your "Roaming" data service rate.
Phone calls are not free and will be charged according to your service plan with telecom operators you subscribe to. 'Calling' feature on KakaoTalk is to enable you to call without having to dial your friend's number.
You can send pictures, voice note, URL links, and contact information from your address book. We are working to include maps and many other types of multimedia in later versions of KakaoTalk.
While in a group chatting room, press the menu button on your phone and turn the alert option off. You will no longer receive alerts for new messages in the chat room.
Press the menu button (beside the call button) on your phone while you are in the chat room. By pressing "Invite", you will be brought to your list of friends where you can choose friends to invite. By selecting certain friends, they will be added to the chat room.
Open the "chats" tab and then press the menu button(beside the call button) on your phone. After pressing "new", choose the people you want to chat with.
You can group chat by selecting multiple friends on the list.
While you are in a group chat, you can add more friends to the chat room by pressing the menu button.
Click the person's profile picture and his/her mini-profile will appear.
By pressing the "Add" button, he/she will be added to your friends list.
Press the menu button (beside the call button) on your phone in the chat room you do not want to receive alerts from and press "Leave".
If you get error messages like above, there are two possible situations.
1. SD Card (external memory) not availabe
KakaoTalk for BlackBerry requires you to use an SD card (external memeory), except for Bold 9900 device.
If your BlackBerry device does not have an SD card, the error message will appear.
2. Your device is connected to PC
If you connect your BlackBerry device to PC and set it on USB mode, the permission to use the SD card is transferred to the PC.
That is why the error message appears when you start KakaoTalk.
**To use KakaoTalk while your Blackberry device is connected to PC
- OS 5.0: When a message to use your phone as a Mass Storage device appears, select "cancel".
(To make this setting default, go to [Option > Memory > Auto Enable Mass Storage Mode When Connected] and select [NO]. This will allow you to use KakaoTalk normally when plugging in your device to PC next time.)
- OS 6.0: Set your device to 'charging mode' when connecting to PC.
KakaoTalk runs on your background to receive incoming messages.
If you want to stop running KakaoTalk, click the BlackBerry Menu button (beside the call button) and select “Close.”
You will not be notified for new messages if you do this.
1.Deleting the app
Deleting the app on your BlackBerry device does not mean your account has been deleted.
If you have deleted your app but not your account, you won't be able to use the same account in case of mobile device or number change.
2.Deleting your account
Even if you delete your account, your app will still remain on your device.
If you wish to delete KakaoTalk completely, delete your account first and then delete the app from your device.
'Delete KakaoTalk' will delete the account and all data associated with the account including phone numbers, friends list, and past chatting history. Chatting will no longer be available and deleted data will not be restored even after reinstallation.
Select "My Profile" under "Setting" tab and uncheck "My ID subject to Search". By doing this, your ID will not be exposed to a third party's search.
1. Please check that you have entered your phone number correctly. Make sure that to enter your phone number without the nation code.
2. Depending on telecom operators in certain countries or regions, it may take a while for you to receive your SMS verification number. If you don't recevie a verification number after 24 hours, please contact us through our website or via email.
Blackberry version of KakaoTalk is currently in open beta phase.
